Algarve
We took a train from Lisbon to Faro and from there drove a rental car to our apartment in Quarteira. This seaside town, which was for centuries little more than a fishing village, transformed itself decades ago into a beach resort. As with other cities in the Algarve, the bulk of its tourists are Northern Europeans, to whom it caters with kitschy restaurants and default English service. The city does not have much in the way of Portuguese culture, but it offers easy access to the beach and a central location which makes it easy to explore the many points of interest of the region.
The Algarve contains both stunning natural scenery and interesting historical sites. The topography is notable for its palm trees, arid hills, steep cliffs, sandy beaches, and the coastal wildlife that populates them. Some cities are home to castles built by the Moors, whose influence continues to be seen in their modern architecture, and some to launching points of the Portuguese expeditions. Alternating between beach days and visits to historic towns, we enjoyed two busy weeks that were at once stimulating and relaxing. It was a wonderful final chapter of my trip.

Nos apanhámos um comboio de Lisboa para Faro e de lá dirigimos um carro alugado para o nosso apartamento em Quarteira. Esta cidade litorânea, que durante séculos foi pouco mais que uma vila de pescadores, transformou-se décadas atrás em um resort de praia. Tal como acontece com outras cidades no Algarve, a maioria dos seus turistas são europeus de norte, a quem ela atende com restaurantes kitsch e serviço padrão em inglês. A cidade não tem muito em termos de cultura portuguesa, mas ela oferece acesso fácil à praia e uma localização central que facilita explorar os muitos pontos de interesse da região.
O Algarve contem tanto belas paisagens naturais como interessantes locais históricos. A topografia é notável pelas suas palmeiras, colinas áridas, penhascos íngremes, praias arenosas, e a animais selvagens que povoa elas. Algumas cidades são o lar de castelos construídos pelos mouros, cujo influência continua ser visto na sua arquitetura moderna, e algumas de pontos de lançamento das expedições portuguesas. A alternar entre dias de praia e visitas a cidades históricas, desfrutamos duas semanas ocupadas que foram tanto interessante e relaxante. Foi um capítulo final maravilhoso da minha viagem.
