Leiria, Fátima, and Aveiro
Having settled into Coimbra, I felt ready for some new adventures and decided to explore a few of the nearby towns. Though relatively small, Leiria, Fátima, and Aveiro all made for rewarding day trips. Each offers enough points of interest to warrant a visit.
At the centre of Leiria is a charming town square, where one can find plenty of diversion people-watching, strolling through Poets Park, or simply admiring the twelfth-century castle that overlooks the town. This castle is open to the public, and touring it was the high point of my trip. Stepping inside its walls, I felt my boyhood fascination with the medieval world revive in full force. The grounds contain many historic structures open for exploration, and it is even possible to scale the parapet inside the keep. This point of the castle is somewhat dangerous due to the lack of guard rails, the uneven walkway, and the high wind, but the risk-taker is rewarded with an unforgettable view.
Fátima provides a different kind of spectacle. Spending just a few hours there on an ordinary Monday, I must have seen thousands of other pilgrims––yet the place is so large that it felt almost empty. The plaza seems infinite, and the size of the great churches that enclose it is truly awesome. The site displays an interesting mix of traditional and modern architectural styles, but all its buildings are aesthetically united by their common grandeur.
Less grand, but equally artful, Aveiro’s historic centre is beautifully designed. Its canal system, unique within Portugal, creates a distinct aesthetic, and even in February the boats are packed with tourists. Many of the houses bear decorative tile façades or are painted in bright colours, the parks are charmingly landscaped, and even the pavement displays an amazing level of ornament. In some ways, Aveiro is the aesthetic reverse of Fátima: impressive in its details rather than its totality; but both places attest with equal force to the Portuguese love of beauty.

Tendo estabelecido-me in Coimbra, senti-me disposto para algumas aventuras novas e decidi explorar algumas cidades próximas. No entanto são relativamente pequenas, Leiria, Fátima, e Aveiro foram viagens boas. Cada oferece muitos pontos de interesse.
No centro de Leiria há uma praça formosa, onde pode encontrar recreação a ver pessoas, a andar pelo Parque das Poetas, ou a admirar o castelo que olha a cidade de cima. Este castelo é publico, e vê-lo foi a ótima parte da minha viagem. Dentro das muralhas, senti-me como um menino outra vez a lembrar-me do meu fascinação com o mundo medieval. Há muitas estruturas que podem explorar-se, e o parapeito da torre de menagem pode escalar-se. Este ponto do castelo é perigoso, mas ele fornece a mais boa vista da cidade.
Fátima oferece um diferente tipo de espectáculo. Indo na segunda feira, vi provavelmente milhares de outros peregrinos––mas o lugar é tão grande que ele pareceu quase vazio. A praça parece infinito, e a dimensão das igrejas grandes que a incluem é incrível. O sito tem uma mistura interessante de arquitetônicos estilos tradicionais e modernas, sed todos os seus edifícios são unidos pela sua grandeza comum.
Menos grande, mas igualmente astuto, o histórico centro de Aveiro é cheio de desenha linda. A sua sistema de canais, único em Portugal, cria uma estética distinta para a cidade, e mesmo em fevereiro os barcos ficam lotados de turistas. Muitas das casas têm fachadas de azulejos decorativos ou são pintadas com cores vivas, os parques são lindos, e até as calçada exibem muito ornamente. De certa forma, Aveiro é o reverso estético de Fátima: impressionante nos seus detalhes e não na sua totalidade; mas ambos os lugares atestam com igual força o amor português pela beleza.
