England and Scotland I enjoyed London so much that I decided to extend my time in Britain, taking a tour which brought me on a northerly course through five cities in twelve days. These cities were diverse enough in character as to give me something of a cross section of the country. Cambridge was the first stop. Centred around a medieval district, this university town is famous for its college chapels, simple but grand buildings surrounded by immaculate lawns. With its cloistered campuses, the university offers visitors a peaceful atmosphere perfectly suited to study and contemplation. The next stop was rowdier: Nottingham, the home of Robin Hood, takes prides in its history of producing outlaws. Its fondness for rebels, particularly for those who rob the rich and give to the poor, may be explained by the fact that it is the poorest city in the United Kingdom.
